Dartmouth, Massachusetts resident Ian Grant, who was wanted on a felony warrant, attempted to flee police in Massachusetts on the morning of Wednesday, April 13, before ultimately crashing in Connecticut and being apprehended in New London County by police in North Stonington.
During the chase, which began around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, it is alleged that as Grant was being pursued by New Bedford Police officers in Massachusetts when state police troopers set up stop sticks on Route 195 in Westport.
Police said that as Grant approached the stop sticks, he drove off the highway into the median directly at Massachusetts State Troopers, striking two cruisers in the process, allowing him to flee after driving the wrong way on the highway.
The vehicle was later located in Rhode Island, and another pursuit ensued, state police said, during which Grant allegedly displayed an assault rifle directed toward troopers.
According to police, the pursuit made its way into Stonington from Route 78 to Route 2, where Grant’s truck was disabled east of the North Stonington Rotary.
“An hour-long standoff followed, as Grant refused to exit his vehicle,” police said. “Eventually, Connecticut State (Police) troopers and Rhode Island State (Police) troopers were able to remove Grant from his vehicle and place him into custody.
Grant was charged with:
- Reckless Driving;
- Engaging police in a pursuit;
- Failure to drive in proper lane;
- Interfering with an officer/resisting arrest;
- Reckless endangerment.
Connecticut State Police investigators noted that Grant is also the suspect of an arson that happened at his Dartmouth home on the same morning as the chase.
Grant was transported to Backus Hospital for an evaluation and then to Connecticut State Police Troop E in Montville. He’s being held on a $200,000 bond and scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Thursday, April 14.
He is expected to face further charges in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
